A fact from Russia in the Council of Europe appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 28 March 2022 (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:
Did you know... that when Russia joined the Council of Europe in 1996, "no serious observer believed that it met the criteria for membership"?
The following is an archived discussion of the DYK nomination of the article below. Please do not modify this page. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as this nomination's talk page, the article's talk page or Wikipedia talk:Did you know), unless there is consensus to re-open the discussion at this page. ALT1: ... that during its membership, Russia showed "persistent and clear disregard of the values and aims of" the Council of Europe, including by invading and occupying other member states?
Overall: Sources found in the article contains the direct quotes in these hooks. I prefer ALT0 since it's shorter. Riley1012 (talk) 20:01, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
this, unfortunately, also falls under the scope of hooks on hold per the DYK RfC on Russia/Ukraine. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 09:32, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
RfC is done, but since Russia was just expelled from the C of E, I think we should wait a few days to a week before promotion, get this news cycle out of the way. The article still seems to be undergoing heavy editing. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 20:03, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
theleekycauldron There has been some editing, but not edit wars or disruption. My understanding is that normal editing is not a reason for refusing DYK. (t · c) buidhe 20:18, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Buidhe: I suppose not, but I don't think it's wrong to wait a couple days when the subject of an article is affected by the news cycle of a recent event. Just to stay on the safe side. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 20:24, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Note that I am passing this nomination as it is stable and meets the DYK criteria as per previous review. 97198 (talk) 07:09, 21 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The article currently says: "On 25 February 2022, a day after Russia invaded Ukraine, 42 of 47 member states voted to immediately suspend Russia's voting privileges in both PACE and the Committee of Ministers. The only country besides Russia to vote against was Armenia; Azerbaijan did not attend and Turkey abstained." If 42 of 47 states voted to suspend Russia, that means that 5 states did not vote to suspend Russia (either voting against, absent, or abstaining). We have Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey accounted for among those five. What was the other country? --Metropolitan90(talk) 03:07, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Metropolitan90 The meeting was officially confidential but information is leaked, possibly not all the information on votes. I agree that the numbers don't add up but I see no alternative but to rely on the sources that are available. (t · c) buidhe 03:15, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the following sentence to the article: "The fifth country that did not vote to suspend Russia has not been identified." --Metropolitan90(talk) 03:39, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
